THE BREATH OF SPRING:
THE 1936 POPULAR FRONT

A film by FABIEN BÉZIAT and HUGUES NANCY

Paid holidays, a 40-hour work week, higher wages, better working conditions, recognition of trade union delegates, support for farmers, nationalization of industries, banking reforms, social housing policy, education and culture for all, creation of the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research)... From 1936 to 1938, following the election of the socialist Léon Blum, the Popular Front governments launched historic reforms which changed the lives of the French people.

What remains of this mythical legacy which left a lasting mark on the French society? A Breath of Spring looks back at this extraordinary period in our history: the uprising of the Left against fascism and the alienation of the working masses to build a freer, more egalitarian and united society. Through the portrait of those involved, known or unknown, the film provides a vibrant account of the events which made the Popular Front a symbol of the Left.
